The iENFORCE 2026 Theme: Advancing Planetary Health through Science, Society and Sustainability
Three series of the International Conference on Environmental Forensics (iENFORCE) have been successfully organized by the Department of Environment. The iENFORCE conferences were held on 12–13 November 2013, 19–20 August 2015, and 18–19 September 2018. The primary goal of iENFORCE is to bring together academics, researchers, scientists from both local and international institutions, as well as postgraduate students, to share knowledge, ideas, insights, and experiences in the field of environmental forensics. The conference emphasizes aspects of testing, treatment, monitoring, and management of environmental pollution to contribute effectively to the preservation and protection of the environment.
In general, iENFORCE2013, iENFORCE2015, and iENFORCE2018 have contributed to maintaining Universiti Putra Malaysia’s (UPM) ranking within the 101–150 range in the QS World University Rankings for environmental studies. For example, iENFORCE2013 successfully published its Conference Proceedings through the international publisher Springer-Verlag. Likewise, iENFORCE2015 published its Conference Proceedings as a special issue in Procedia Environmental Sciences, published by Elsevier. Meanwhile, iENFORCE2018 published selected papers in the Journal of Science and Technology, Journal of Tropical Agricultural Science (by Pertanika UPM), and the Planning Malaysia Journal (by the Malaysian Institute of Planners). iENFORCE2026 aims to continue the legacy of the previous conferences, with a renewed focus on ensuring that presented papers are published in indexed proceedings and journals.
Following the success of the previous iENFORCE conferences and in line with the agenda of the Faculty of Forestry and Environment to make such conferences a regular program, the 4th International Conference on Environmental Forensics is proposed to be held in 2026 (iENFORCE2026). The organization of iENFORCE2026 is also a strategic move to revive the branding of this conference, which has been recognized in the field of environmental forensics.
As a new development, iENFORCE2026 will broaden its scope by inviting paper submissions from researchers across various disciplines—not only in the core field of environmental forensics but also encompassing applied sciences and social sciences. This interdisciplinary approach aims to foster a more holistic exchange of ideas, thereby enriching discussions and innovation in addressing environmental issues. In support of this, iENFORCE2026 will feature the following sub-themes:
Pollution Control and Environmental Treatment Technologies
Green Technologies and Innovation for Environmental Protection
Artificial Intelligence and Digital Tools for Environmental Applications
Ecosystem Conservation and Biodiversity Protection
Water Resources Management and Hydrology
Climate Change Impacts, Mitigation, and Adaptation
Environmental Modelling and Life Cycle Assessment
Environmental Policy, Governance, and Education
Environmental Economics, Planning, and Management
SDGs in Practice
Furthermore, iENFORCE2026 aims to establish collaborations with international universities, government agencies, and industries as strategic partners in organizing the conference, to ensure wider participation from all sectors. The involvement of these various strategic networks is expected to strengthen collaboration, promote continuous professional development, and ensure the sustainability of the program in the future.
